What Is Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy?
Ketamine can create a meaningful shift in perspective. KAP surrounds that experience with preparation, supported medicine sessions, and integration so insight has somewhere to go.
At a glance
What to carry forward
- KAP combines ketamine with psychotherapy; the medicine is one part of a larger clinical process.
- Preparation and integration help a temporary state shift become useful, durable change.
- Ketamine is used off-label for mental health and requires individualized clinical screening.
The foundation
Medicine inside a process.
Ketamine-assisted psychotherapy pairs supported ketamine sessions with the preparation and integration that help the experience become lasting change. Ketamine is used off-label for mental health. Its effects can be rapid, but they often fade without the work around them.
The therapy helps turn a state shift into something you can understand, practice, and carry into daily life.
Clinical fit
Where KAP may fit.
We use KAP for complex trauma, depression, anxiety, and entrenched patterns, often alongside a person’s ongoing therapy. It is one modality inside our broader psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy framework, and the only medicine-assisted modality we currently offer.
It is not a cure or a quick fix, and it is not right for everyone. We screen carefully and speak plainly about fit.
The container
Set, setting, and support matter.
The room, therapeutic relationship, preparation, monitoring, and aftercare all shape how an experience is held. At LuminaThera, dosing sessions take place onsite with trained clinical support. We do not offer a take-home or self-guided ketamine model.
Common questions
Questions worth asking plainly
Is KAP the same as receiving ketamine alone?
No. KAP intentionally pairs the medicine experience with psychotherapy, preparation, and integration. The therapeutic process is part of the treatment model.
Does everyone qualify for KAP?
No. Clinical screening is required, and some medical conditions, psychiatric histories, medications, or current circumstances may make KAP inappropriate.
Clinical context
Orientation, not an assessment
Ketamine-assisted psychotherapy uses ketamine in an off-label capacity. Benefits vary and are not guaranteed. Screening considers medical history, mental health history, current stability, medications, and the support available around treatment.
In crisis, call 911 or call or text 988. LuminaThera is not a crisis service.
